Matthias Kronfuss is a multi-disciplinary theatre designer based in Vienna, Austria.
A trained graphic designer running his own studio since 2007, Matthias continued to enrich his artistic practice by working as a photographer and theatre designer. He gained scenography experience as the assistant of renowned Canadian set designer Michael Levine at world-class opera venues such as the Vienna State Opera (Madama Butterfly, 2020), Bayerische Staatsoper (Das Schlaue Füchslein, 2022; Semele, 2023), Bregenz Festival (Madame Butterfly, 2022), Komische Oper Berlin (Chicago, 2023) and Operhaus Zürich (Atonement / Ariadne auf Naxos, 2024).
His first own production was La Clemenza di Tito at the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater in 2019. A frequent guest at Salzburger Landestheater, he has designed sets for theatre (Biografie: Ein Spiel, Pumuckl in 2022; Wickie in 2023) and ballets (Vom Lichten und Dunklen 2023; Sleeping Beauty and Fridas Welt in 2024).
In season 24/25, he made German house debuts with two masterpieces of British Opera: Maxwell Davis’ The Lighthouse at Deutsche Oper am Rhein and Britten’s The Turn of the Screw at Oper Halle.
In season 25/26, he will design the sets for the ballets Romeo and Juliet in Eisenach and Meiningen (chor. Jorge Pérez Martinez) and Studio 54 in Salzburg (chor. Reginaldo Oliveira/Vincenzo Veneruso) as well as sets and costumes for La Traviata in Bremerhaven (dir. Katharina Kastening) and The Little Magic Flute at Salzburg State Theatre (dir. Marco Dott).
He will close the season with a new production of Verdi’s Otello for the Opera Festival Heidenheim, directed by Rosetta Cucchi.
